Thousands of people took to the streets in the capital Bangkok, demanding a change of constitution and a re-election.

People protested against the government near the Demacracy Monument in Thailand’s capital Bangkok on Saturday.

    • The performance was done under the banner of Liberation Youth Group, mostly attended by youth.
    • Police barricaded Bangkok near Democracy Monument to remove protesters

Thousands of people demonstrated against the government in Thailand’s capital Bangkok on Saturday. The protesters demanded the creation of a new constitution in the country, re-election and abolition of laws which are against the people. The performance was done under the banner of Liberation Youth Group. Most of the youth were involved in it. Police barricaded Bangkok’s Democracy Monument to remove the protesters. The demonstration was called off citing emergency law.

Protests have been taking place since 2014 against former Prime Minister of the country, Preyut Chan-o-cha. The former came to power in the country by overthrow. People are angry with the increasing interference of the army in the functioning of the government and are demanding the resignation of Prayut O Chan.

Emergency law is currently in force in the country

Emergency law has been enacted in Thailand in view of the epidemic. This has helped prevent infection. Along with this, there has been a decrease in anti-government demonstrations. However, people allege that the government is using the Emergency Act as a political weapon. In February, a court here ordered a party to be dissolved. This party was popular among the youth due to its democratic policies. There were also demonstrations after this.

Why are there demonstrations against the government?
In 2014, the government was overthrown in Thailand. After this, Praiput, who was General in the army, became Prime Minister. Two years later, in 2016, the new constitution of the country was prepared and a referendum was held. Such changes were made in the constitution that even after the restoration of democracy, the army remained in power. Elections were also held here in 2019. In this, Prayut’s party won. However, after this there were allegations of disturbances in the election. Now people are demanding to change the constitution and anti-people law.
