Indian cricket legend Virat Kohli recalled the 2014 tour of England when he completely flopped in the Test series.
Virat Kohli’s performance on the Indian team’s 2014 tour of England was very disappointing. He averaged 13.50 in 5 Tests. Virat Kohli, however, does not see that tour as a disappointment.
Talking on his Test team opener Mayank Agarwal’s show Open Nets with Mayank, Kohli said, ‘The thing on the 2014 tour of England was that I was not able to keep pace with the conditions and was doing what I wanted to do Was and was stubborn about it. Holding stubbornness about something does not help, it was too late to understand it, but I realized it.
He said, ‘2014 tour will always be a milestone in my career. I thought a lot about how I used to go to matches before that tour, how I used to play. After this, I started becoming fearless. Kohli said, “I realized that when things get tough in Test cricket, it is definitely important for a cricketer to remain calm and that’s what I needed to improve.”
He said, ‘If this tour had not happened, I would have kept playing in the same way and not been able to improve. That tour made me think about how to move forward with my international career. Kohli said that Ravi Shastri’s advice did a lot of work for him after the 1-3 defeat during the England tour.
He said, ‘Ravi Bhai invited me and Shikhar to his room after the 2014 Test series. His understanding is very fast. He told me to stand outside the crease and he told about the mentality behind it. They asked me if I was afraid of a short ball? I said I am not afraid of short-pitch balls. I don’t mind being hurt, I just don’t want to be out. I practiced it in Australia that year and the results were incredible.
Kohli said that after the tour of England, he spoke to Sachin Tendulkar and also did some nets sessions with him in Mumbai. He said, ‘I saw my footage after the England tour. I spoke to Sachin in Mumbai and did some nets sessions. I told him that I am working on my hip position. He told me the importance of a big stance, he told me about going ahead against the fast bowler. On the next England tour, Kohli scored 593 runs in 2018, which includes 2 centuries and 3 half-centuries.
